St. James Hotel MN

Overview

Nestled between the limestone bluffs that line the banks of the Mississippi River, the small town of Red Wing, Minnesota, was the world’s largest primary wheat market in the early 1870s—a rise in popularity and population that necessitated the creation of what is today one of the region’s most celebrated hotels, the St. James. The Italianate building was constructed in 1875 and offered lodging and dining for passengers on the trains that passed through the town. The hotel served the area for decades, but sank into a downward trajectory until the Red Wing Shoe Company purchased the property and funded a detailed restoration in 1975. The new St. James Hotel now boasts 61 guest rooms—no two alike, each one named after a famous 19th-century riverboats that plied the waters of the ol’ Miss, each individually decorated in Victorian antiques and reproductions, including hand-made quilts and period wall coverings, many with river views. And in the St. James Courtyard, 12 distinctive shops await exploration.

The town got its name from Chief Red Wing, a Mdewakanton Dakota Sioux whose emblem was a scarlet swan's wing.
